Erste Kreativ-Residenz aus Linz: "Open Design Guide"
01.10.2012

Ab Oktober begrüßt CREATE BERLIN die erste Kreativ-Residenz aus Linz und Oberösterreich. Das Stipdendium der Creative Region Linz Upper Austria ermöglicht der Künstlerin und Industriedesignerin Magdalena Reiter einen zweimonatigen Aufenthalt in Berlin, in dem sie ihren „Open Design Guide“ verfassen wird.

open design & creative commons

Region Linz & Upper Austria GmbH.

Creative Spree - Shanghai
15.11.2007 - 21.11.2009

Designers and artists showcase their Berlin-inspired works at the exhibition “CREATIVE SPREE” taking place in Shanghai from November 15th to 21st 2007.
After the Asia- Pacific weeks in Berlin CREATE BERLIN continues to build international design networks, this time linking Berlin design scene and its creative potential with Asia.

SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL CREATIVE INDUSTRY WEEK (SICIW), a lifestyle and design fair, is the chosen platform for the “CREATIVE SPREE"” exhibition. Various imaginative and inventive works by young and established product- and fashion designers and graphic artists from the German capital will be showcased on 200 esq. large exhibition spaces.

CREATE BERLIN, that organises and curates “CREATE SPREE"” exhibition in Shanghai, aims to link with this particular project the businesses and creative industries in Berlin and Asia – an idea that Asian-Pacific weeks in Berlin successfully started with. The SICIW, with its established networks and publicity attracting representatives in politics, businesses and culture, seems a perfect platform for their ambitious initiative.

Shanghai is the next project, the door opener for CREATE BERLIN to consequently follow within the declared agenda to support Berlin’s talents and creative industries and to promote German capital as a vibrant and creative city. The show in Shanghai enables CREATE BERLIN to access important distributional areas and markets and to provide Berlin talents with first-hand direct contacts with key producers and manufacturers.

“CREATIVE SPREE"” showcases such designers and labels as Kaviar Gauche (fashion), the winner of the Karstadt New Generation Award at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in July 2007. Miroike are another creative duo, both have been taught by the British fashion icon Vivienne Westwood, and have had regular shows in Paris and Berlin. The label Smeilinener has made their debut in Berlin too, and acclaimed recognition with their avant-garde and colourfully daring fashion at the Berlin Fashion Week.

Graphics and illustrative arts are represented through the original and very creative works by Jacques et Brigitte, the winner of the Print Magazine’s European Design Annual 2007, and by the group Pfadfinderei known for their Labstyle Performance evenings and the vector graphic shows. Product designers participating are Susanne Philippson – her furniture and lamps are produced by Pallucco, Habitat and Droogs, and internationally established COORDINATION design group known for their ambitious and daring works.

The exhibition "CREATIVE SPREE" was set up in "Old Mill Fun", an old factory in Shanghai.

New Year's Reception of Berlin's Creative Minds
04.01.2009 - 06.01.2009

From January the 4th to 6th CREATE BERLIN presents the exhibition “20 Years Since the Fall of the Wall—Free Space” at the Schlossplatz. On January 6th, 2009, CREATE BERLIN, Vitra, minimum einrichten and the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin for the New Year’s Reception of Berlin Creatives. The reception will be opened by the Mayor of Berlin and the Senator of Economics, Harold Wolf, as well as the executive of Vitra, Rudolf Pütz.

The Creatives are first: On January 6th, 2008, the ambassadors of the creative economy are invited to the New Year’s Reception at the historic Schlossplatz. At the startof the year, the Interior Design Specialist Vitra, the Berlin Furniture Specialist minimum einrichten with shops in Stilwerk, and the Design Network CREATE BERLIN are invited to the Temporären Kunsthalle Berlin. Next to the ambassadors of the creative branches, the New Year’s Reception aligns itself with those working in the fields of politics, economics, media, art, and culture. The aim of the New Year’s Reception is to bring the branches of the creative economy and its embassies even closer together.

The Creatives are also the first to approach the topic of 1989 – 2009 and the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the exhibition “20 Years Since the Fall of the Wall—Freespace,” CREATE BERLIN presents the 20 most innovative interdisciplinary creative concepts from the UNESCO awarded City of Design. In September 2008, CREATE BERLIN initiated a competition between roughly 80 interdisciplinary teams, resulting in the opportunity to appear in the international exhibition CREATE BERLIN GOES LONDON in the British Metropolis.

The decisions were made by a jury composed of Prof. François Burkhardt, the Design Theorist and former executive of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Prof. Erik Spiekermann, the Typographer who was voted the first Designer in the Hall of Fame of the European Design Awards for Communication Design in 2007 as well as the winner of the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Prof. Stephan Schneider, the Professor of the Berlin UdK following Vivienne Westwood.

Under this exclusive symposia lies a plethora of exciting projects, such as those of the creative teams COORDINATION und diephotodesigner.de. They photographed a reflective polygonal object in a variety of locations along the path of the former Berlin Wall in order to accentuate the perspectives of the different facets of Berlin. The Product Designer Tina Roeder, who studied at the Central St. Martins College in London, and her team partner David Krings, Alumnus of the Art Academy in Arnheim, are also worth noticing. They create icons of a modern Berlin, depicting approximations of the Pergamon Museum via their detail-rich reliefs and sculptures. Their motifs mirror the History of Berlin of the 21st Century. The following teams will be displayed:

Create Berlin goes London
18.09.2008 - 21.09.2008

During the London Design Festival 2008 Berlin occupies a special place in the British capital. In cooperation with Berlin Partner GmbH, the design initiative CREATE BERLIN presents twenty interdisciplinary projects about the topic "Berlin: 20 Years of the Creative Metropolis" in commemoration of the upcoming 20-year anniversary Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The exhibition takes place at the Dray Walk Gallery on the premises of the Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, East London, E1 6 QL - showcasing ideas, concepts and projects reflecting the state of creativity in the German capital. On display are works by:

  • Coordination (Interior) + diephotodesigner.de (Fotografie)

  • MAGMA Brand Design (Grafik) + xplicit Berlin (Grafik)
  • Josephine Rank (Grafik) + mijuly & ca (Kommunikationsdesign)

  • KEX Spitzenkultur (Fashion) + Zeitgeist Toys (Kunst)
  • SSD Team (Medizin, Kommunikation, Interior, Fashion, Sound)
  • make-do (Architektur) + Âme Soeur by Taschén ( Fashion)

The project-based works examplify the diversity of the German creative capital: The project "Off Limits" by Magma Design and xplicit – an accessible image cube – addresses the up-to-dateness of the topic "walls". COORDINATION and diephotodesigner.de developed a mirrored sculpture called "CRYSTAL CITY MIND," which travelled along the former path of the Berlin Wall in a photo-series. Josephine Rank and mijuly & ca are contributing the so-called "Berlin Guest Beds" to the exhibition, which open up a variety of interpretive possibilities. llot llov and Lala Berlin projected the "division of space" theme onto a number of objects (lampshades), which, by means of an additional element (rope), evolved into something totally unique - an aesthetic and functioning lamp sculpture. The project of Tina Roeder and David Krings reflects the history of Berlin in the 21st Century. They designed icons for a modern Berlin, which are represented by a collection of detail-rich, cardboard-constructed models.

The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, personally introduced the exhibition on the opening event.
"Following New York last year, now we’re showing in London the best sides of our Berlin as a pulsating and creative city," says Wowereit. "I'm really looking forward to this exciting project!" René Gurka, CEO of Berlin Partner GmbH adds: "After 'Berlin Day in New York' and the exhibition 'Made in Berlin' in Milan, CREATE BERLIN GOES LONDON is the third collaborative project between CREATE BERLIN and Berlin Partner GmbH for promoting Berlin design internationally. Creativity and location marketing come together here in an ideal way."

Whoever wants to take a part of Berlin home with them will discover top class design objects and souvenirs by Berlin designers in the associated CREATE BERLIN Shop outside the Dray Walk Gallery. And beyond the timeframe of the CREATE BERLIN GOES LONDON exhibition, a part of Berlin will remain in London: from September until the end of 2008, Tate Modern is offering top quality design objects by Berlin designers for sale in its own design shop.

Berlin Day in New York
17.05.2007

Berlin in New York - From May, 10 2007 till November 2007, over 80 products of 20 Berlin Designers were sold in the MoMa Design Store. "Destination: Berlin" was the biggest sales exhibition of its kind in the MoMa Design Store. As highlight of the BERLIN DAY in New York, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, will open the exhibition “Suitcases from Berlin” on May 17.

BERLIN DESIGN GOES MOMA NEW YORK
MoMA takes Design from Europe’s No. 1 Creative Metropolis to New York. On recommendation by KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin (www.kw-berlin.de) and CREATE BERLIN, initiative for Berlin Designers, (www.create-berlin.de) more than 80 products by over 20 Berlin Designers including Marlies von Soden, Roomsafari, Adam and Harborth as well as Bless will be sold in the MoMA Design Stores from May 10 until November 2007. With “Destination: Berlin"”, MoMA is presenting the biggest sales exhibition of this kind in its Design Stores and directs international focus towards Berlin as the first European city awarded the title “City of Design"” by UNESCO. In celebration of the official opening of “Destination: Berlin”" on May 17th, CREATE BERLIN and Berlin Partner GmbH, business development and city marketing agency, are organizing the BERLIN DAY.

GET READY FOR THE EINZIGARTIG (UNIQUE) BERLIN DAY IN NEW YORK
Ambassadors of the Creative Industries and the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, represent the creative metropolis at the BERLIN DAY in New York on May 17, 2007.– On that day, New York will only talk about one topic: Creativity from Berlin. The BERLIN DAY is initiated by CREATE BERLIN in cooperation with Berlin Partner GmbH to boost and promote the international reputation of Berlin as a business and creative location. 30 ambassadors of Berlin’s creative sector will travel to New York for the BERLIN DAY. Important points on the agenda of the delegation from Berlin will be the opening of the exhibition “Koffer aus Berlin”" (Suitcase from Berlin), which was initiated and curated by CREATE BERLIN, and the visit of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit to the MoMA Design Store followed by the Berlin Party.
A business dinner with select New York guests is especially aimed at a linking of important multipliers within the creative industries of both cities. Berlin Partner hosts the event in the MoMA Restaurant The Modern featuring Berlin and New York cuisine presented by star chefs Semmler und Kreuther. This will be the place where the Berlin delegation meets influential multipliers and economic contacts from New York. And at the end of the day, the BERLIN DAY will shape New York’s nightlife: The band Mia will provide Berlin entertainment with a midnight concert – in the true fashion of the German capital.

CREATE BERLIN starts the International Campaign I LOVE BERLIN with the BERLIN DAY.
The BERLIN DAY in New York is the first mission and portrays CREATE BERLIN’s clear commitment to the new campaign I LOVE BERLIN, intended to be the link between world-wide design metropolises and Berlin. The I LOVE BERLIN mascot KOSMO guides visitors through this growing creative jungle of the design metropolises. As an adventure-loving cosmo-/ astronaut based in Berlin, it conquers the creative cities and puts down I LOVE BERLIN flags.

BERLIN CREATIVES ARE PACKING THEIR SUITCASES FOR NEW YORK
New York, May 17, 2007 – One of the BERLIN DAY highlights will be the opening of the exhibition “Koffer aus Berlin"” (Suitcase from Berlin) in the presence of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit. The exhibition that is initiated and curated by CREATE BERLIN features the contents of this suitcase, which was especially designed and packed for this exhibition by Berlin creatives. Just how much creativity fits into a suitcase is demonstrated by talents such as the shootingstars from Berlin’s Architecture scene, Graft, who attracted a lot of attention with their designs for the art gallery on the Berlin Schlossplatz, the castle square; Werner Aisslinger, the only German Designer represented at the MoMA with his own design chair; internationally renowned Berliners include DJ Paul van Dyk, the Illustrator Olaf Hajek and the Gestalten Verlag, Berlin Product Designers like Mykita and Zeha as well as the fashion labels Bless and Kaviar Gauche and the fashion designer Michael Michalsky. With their suitcases the creatives will travel to New York for the kick-off of this exhibition and will not only present their individual Berlin, but also a snapshot and a cross section of creativity from Berlin. The exhibition will be shown in Soho from May 17, 2007.

BUSINESS LOCATION BERLIN – THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY IN NUMBERS
With more than 6,000 companies active in architecture, advertising, design, photography and the fine arts, Berlin is the undisputed design capital of Germany. In the past several years, numerous new ateliers have opened in the city and major corporations such as Volkswagen AG have transferred their design centers to the region in order to profit from the exciting and creative atmosphere. More than 10,000 people work in the design industry in Berlin creating an annual turnover of approximately 1.4 billion euro. Berlin is a city where fashion, media and graphic design engage in an ongoing creative exchange with product and furniture design. This productive synergy is embodied by companies such as Meta Design, Art+Com, Plex and Moniteurs. Therefore in November 2005, Berlin became the first European city to be designated by UNESCO as an official “City of Design”", thus ensuring its membership in an exclusive network of creative cities.
